Back once again to School Activities and Ice Breakers for Upper Elementary

I inquired almost 400 teachers what their back that is favorite to activities and ice breakers were. The answers were amazing! Teachers gave returning to school book suggestions, ideas for building a positive classroom community, ice breakers and more for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students!

There were so many great ideas them all that I can’t share. So, I organized all the answers, trying to find the most popular, probably the most unique, as well as the most practical returning to school activities. A number of the trained teachers were prepared to share ideas but asked to remain anonymous, therefore I respected that request. The absolute most popular activities and some of my favorites are below!

Most Well Known Back Into School Activities

Several returning to school activities kept coming up over and over repeatedly. The activities below were a few of the most popular, utilized by many teachers all over the world.

All About Me Activities – The most popular All About Me Activity was the All About Me Bag – which happens to one of my favorite returning to school activities as well. Two Truths and a Lie – Another one of my favorites! It is called by me find the Fib. Find out how to utilize this as an ice breaker – and for other activities through the entire school year – here. (also incorporates a free of charge printable!)

STEAM Team Building Activities – returning to school is a great time and energy to integrate STEAM into your classroom! The teachers surveyed had some great activities for STEAM team building events at the beginning of the season, including: Saving Fred, Helping Harry, a Cup Stacking Challenge, and a Spaghetti and Marshmallow Challenge.

Returning to School Read Alouds – The teachers I surveyed listed a huge selection of back to school books to learn with their class, even though the favorite that is overwhelming First Day Jitters. Other favorites included many thanks, Mr. Falker , School’s First of School, Wemberly Worried, Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners, Spider School, The Dot, and Oh, the Places You’ll Go! day

Back to School Ice Breakers

The teachers I surveyed had so many great ice breaker ideas that I had to make a section specialized in just ice breakers and team builders.

Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament – Amy, who teaches Grade 5, says that “when students lose they cheer when it comes to person they lost to throughout the tournament.” Learn more here.
