Stephen Warnock fears for Manchester City without former captain Vincent Kompany
Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock says he is concerned about Manchester City’s defence, even describing some of the players as”not powerful enough.”
City suffered their first defeat of the year as Norwich beat them 3-2 at Carrow Road.
They had been following knee surgery centre-back Aymeric Laporte who’ll miss five to six months.
Warnock told Sky Sports News:”You seem at Manchester City’s bench at the rear, it’s not powerful enough and defences acquire you names.
“The players that Liverpool have to come in their assault will win them games, they are more than capable of scoring goals.
“Therefore I fear of Manchester City, I always worried that [Vincent] Kompany leaving could be a significant loss to them, not just on the pitch but in and about the training ground, the mindset and understanding he’s got.
“He didn’t play lots of games for City, however it had been the large games when he was needed.”
City’s shock defeat to Norwich has abandoned them five points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table, also Warnock is impressed with all Jurgen Klopp’s team’s power.
“Everybody always says, when Liverpool lose one of their front three, they’re in big trouble since they won’t score targets. I consider it the other way round.
“I think Liverpool’s pay in defence – they’ve got [Dejan] Lovren, they’ve got [Joe] Gomez – who are sat on the bench who aren’t playing and that are more than capable of playing in the very first team quite professionally.”
Their manager Pep Guardiola dismissed suggestions his side have a weakness in his or her defence, although Nicolas Otamendi and john Stones began the game against Norwich.
He told Sky Sports after the defeat:”it is a partnership that has played a lot. We have got Rodri and Fernandinho who will play there in other scenarios and it’s not a concern. Things occur.”
