how complexity defied all odds to win the eclub world cup
the team’s fifa eclub world cup journey started with five weeks of online qualifiers, where 190 teams battled for 24 spots. complexity placed second in the north american qualifiers only behind manchester city esports.
the world cup began on february 7 with complexity placed in group d alongside man city esports, one of the tournament favorites. sporting cp esports, who replaced fierce esports just a day before the event due to a player absence, was also in group d. complexity put up an impressive performance on day one as they topped the table. they ended the day with just two losses in nine games.
the team continued their solid day one form and secured a spot to the knockout stages, still topping the group. day two of the world cup produced a lot of drama for group d as three teams were tied at 17 points for the last spot to the knockouts.
sporting cp took the fourth spot in the group and went through to the knockouts on a goal difference technicality. meanwhile, man city esports suffered a painful exit at the group stage. joksan and maxe defeated mkers in the round of 16 with a dominant performance in both the 1v1 and 2v2 formats.
the final day of the tournament; fnatic and as roma eliminated
the tournament’s last day featured the quarterfinals to the finals. complexity went on to defeat former eworld cup winner spencer “gorilla” ealing and his neo partner, tom “stokes” stokes in the quarterfinals. they faced as roma esport, the last italian team in the tournament.
a goal in the 2v2 round’s second half was enough for complexity to book their place in the grand final. complexity gaming took on elleven esports, who had defeated fnatic in their semi-final game. they ended the newly formed team’s run in a dramatic penalty shoot-out during the third leg of the game.
complexity’s win makes them the third team to win the fifa eclub world cup. coming into the tournament, the north american team was hardly expected to clinch the title. although few predicted such an outcome, complexity gaming ended up as deserving champions of the world cup.
