Tour de France: Britain’s Chris Froome says 2020 Tour route is ‘brutal’ as he aims for fifth title

Britain’s Chris Froome has called the road to the 107th edition of the Tour de France”brutal” as he plans to get a record-equalling fifth title.
Riders will face 29 hills on the 3,470km (2,156-mile) 21-stage path, which begins in Nice on 27 June.
The hopes of froome may break in the hill time trial at La Planche des Belles Filles ahead of the conventional final sprint phase at Paris on 19.
“It’ll be won and lost in the hills but that satisfies me,” he said.
Eddy Merckx, jacques Anquetil, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain are all five-time winners of this race, with Froome one behind.
“That is really the hardest route I’ve seen anywhere in the past five decades,” added Froome who missed that the 2019 Tour following a high-speed crash before phase four of the Criterium du Dauphine in June.
“There are loads of opportunities for the overall classification to perform out and the key rivals to go head to head. That is what everybody wants to see.”
The Tour, which begins a week to adapt the Tokyo Olympics starting on 24 July, includes five summit finishes – one of them being time trial at La Planche des Belles Filles – and also is very likely to favour the climbers.
“It will be physically challenging during,” said race director Christian Prudhomme.
“The so-called flat phases will be quite demanding for its pure sprinters. There are traps everywhere along the road.”
The 2020 Tour boasts one of the opening months in recent editions of this race.
Two phases finish and start at Nice, the next of which entails nearly 3,700 metres of climbing within Col de Turini, the Col de la Colmiane and Col d’Eze.
The race heads south west through the Massif Central, together with summit finishes around.
Champion Egan Bernal and his Ineos Froome will wish to challenge, as will the Thibaut Pinot of France.

Froome won point seven to the mountain in 2012, while playing a super-domestique’s role since Bradley Wiggins became the first Briton to win on the Tour.
Tour de France organisers ASO declared that women race La Course will return to Paris at the format of its first three editions.
The women’s peloton will race 13 laps of a circuit round the Champs-Elysees with the race.
Before becoming one mountain stage at 2018 and a hilly one-day race at Pau this season Following three decades in Paris after the very first version in 2014 of La Course , the race proceeded into a event in 2017.
Driver Marianne Vos is the reigning champion, having also won the inaugural version of La Course.
